Vale a pena ler In Vino Veritas: I’ll Drink to That, do Roger Scruton – publicado na Standpoint desse mês. O ensaio é quase uma ode ao vinho e à importância que a bebida em geral, e o vinho em particular, tiveram no desenvolvimento da nossa sociedade. O que o texto talvez tenha de excessivo é compensado pela clareza com que mostra os danos de todo tipo de puritanismo. A consequência, diz lá o Scruton, é sempre trocar um “não” absoluto por um “sim” também absoluto e, diga-se, totalmente egoísta. Quem leu a Dicta 3 já sabe onde tudo isso vai levar…
Aliás, estou começando a perceber que uma das características do Scruton é que não importa se o assunto é vinho, arquitetura, política ou filosofia, ele sempre chega no mesmo lugar. Se isso é um defeito ou uma qualidade, por enquanto fica por conta de vocês, eu só queria mesmo era provocar. E se a idéia é provocar, lá vai só um techinho do texto:
“When people sit down together in a public place – a place where none of them is sovereign but each of them at home – and when those people pass the evening together, sipping drinks in which the spirit of place is stored and amplified, maybe smoking or taking snuff and in any case willingly exchanging the dubious benefits of longevity for the certain joys of friendship, they rehearse in their souls the original act of settlement, the act that set our species on the path of civilisation, and which endowed us with the order of neighbourhood and the rule of law. When, however, people swig drinks without interest in their neighbours, except as equal members of the wild host of hunter-gatherers, when their sole concern is the intoxicating effect and when the drink itself is neither savoured nor understood, then are they rehearsing that time before civilisation, in which life was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.”
PS: “Mais uma indicação do Roger Scruton?” dirá o nosso leitor atento. “Não é possível, aí tem algum plano maligno. Será uma conspiração?”. Eu respondo: não, querido leitor. É só coincidência mesmo. E por falar nisso, se tiver um tempinho leia também esse texto e veja lá como a nossa mania conspiratória não é nada boa…
